Movie Weekend!

This weekend, I went to see two movies with my mom:  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Book Thief.

I really love weekends like these, because I get most of my work done early in the morning, and then we go out in the afternoon to see movies.  I saw The Hobbit on Friday and The Book Thief today.  I really loved both movies, and I can’t really say which one I liked better.  I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan, so The Hobbit movies are just automatically great, despite straying from the book a lot.  As for The Book Thief, I read the book in 8th grade and again in the fall before the movie came out, and I am absolutely in love with it.  It is up there on my all time favorite book list with Harry PotterThe Lord of the Rings, Charlotte’s Web, Where the Red Fern Grows, and I’m going to stop there because I have a LOT of favorite books; so many that I can’t list them all here. (Hm, is that a post idea I smell? I’ll get working on that.)  The Book Thief movie did not stray very far from the book, in fact.  The directors left quite a bit out, but I’m sure that if they did manage to squeeze all of the bits and pieces of the story in there, then the movie would probably be longer than one of the Lord of the Rings movies.  However, they could have included a few things that they left out, and some important scenes didn’t pack enough punch for my taste, but it was still a good movie nonetheless.

Look at me, I’m becoming somewhat of a movie critic.  I’ll be seeing more movies soon, since I always go out and see lots of movies during Oscar season.  Perhaps I’ll talk about some of those as well.

  1. I am such a Tolkien fan as well. I loved the movie! I was so afraid that Smaug wasn’t going to be as creepy as he actually is… lol
I can’t wait for the next movie.

The Book Thief hasn’t been released yet here in the depths of Brazil, lol but it’s good to know it’s a good movie. I’ll watch it when possible 🙂

    Have a nice Sunday!

  2. Hey! I’m a movie fan as well. Went to see The Hobbit last week (liked it a lot!) but unfortunately The Book Thief has not been released in Holland. However, I saw a preview of it and got my attention for sure. Good to read you liked it, I’m probably going to see it as well 🙂

  3. I also read The Book Thief in 8th grade! It’s one of my favorite books of all time too, but I haven’t seen the movie yet. 😦 The book was utterly heart-wrenching, gaah; hopefully the emotion was as powerful in the movie as it was in the book!! Was it still narrated by Death?

I agree, the Hobbit DEFINITELY strays from the book, but I really, really like the direction it takes. For example, the romance between Kili and Tauriel was definitely not in the book, but I loved it!! 😀

Also, have you seen Frozen? I highly recommend that movie if you haven’t already! 😀
